Our curriculum comes with shared reading books that we read for a week. We have been practicing partner reading with our books. Students are doing a great job supporting one another!
Our focus this week and next week is fish and water.
Measuring ocean animals using a variety of manipulatives. They then have to order the objects by size on a separate recording sheet.
We are working on reading words with prefixes and suffixes. I punched the fish out on the Ellison then made a pattern to cut them in half. All prefix words have one pattern and suffix words have a different pattern. Students are picking up on the skill!
This kiddo is determining whether objects sink or float. This is definitely a favorite center!
Making "aquariums" out of paper plates. Once students colored the background and added fish and plants, we stapled another paper plate over the top with the center of the plate cut out. The cutout part has a piece of plastic wrap over it.
I'll be back later this weekend with some writing work done this week. What is your class studying?
Looks like lots of fun fishy activities. We will be doing an ocean unit in a couple of weeks. :)

I'd love to see more of your center about prefixes and suffixes...it is an intimidating thing to try and teach to my kindergarteners. I would love any tips!

I agree, Julie! I started by teaching prefixes and suffixes full group. I made sure they could "read" re-, pre-, un-, -less, -ed, -ful before introducing the center. I also have them partnered at centers (unfortunately it is not free choice) so that my lowest ones aren't together and have some support. There are only 2-3 of each color with prefixes and suffixes. If I were to do it again, I think I would made a pattern for each prefix and suffix to make it more self checking. I would rather them have words that make sense then just be guessing what might go together!
DeleteIt was very difficult to find word that they might know (and be able to sound out) with pre-. I used predict and preview. I know predict isn't necessarily a prefix word, but they got the idea. I'd love to hear new ideas if you have them too! It is a tough standard! Thanks for commenting!
